Sustaining the Work: First steps in fundraising for pastor-training ministries

Summary

September’s FM89 examined beliefs that shape fundraising for pastor-training ministries. Dr. Brad Smith argued that ministry leaders need a robust biblical theology of money to sustain their calling and equip pastors to disciple believers in this area.

He challenged four misconceptions: money is evil, fundraising is begging, leaders should fundraise alone, and fundraising is mysterious or quickly mastered. Instead, money is God’s gift to steward with transparency and accountability, while fundraising is relationship-building that can help both ministry leaders and donors grow as disciples. Effective fundraising requires prayer, teamwork, clear communication, storytelling, encouragement, and coaching over time.

Smith introduced the “Donor Orbit,” which maps a ministry’s core community, advisors, advocates, friends, and acquaintances as relationships to nurture. Paula Togni illustrated these principles through Hope House in Brazil, which developed support from government, churches, a thrift store, and product sales. Dr. Ramesh Richard closed by emphasizing dependence on God: leaders should act in faith rather than presumption, do what God has entrusted to them, and trust Him for timely, adequate provision.

Reflective Questions

  1. Which misconception discussed in this session (listed above) has most influenced your attitude toward fundraising, and how has it affected your ministry?
  2. How might viewing fundraising as discipleship and relationship-building change the way you relate to current or potential supporters?

Action-Oriented Questions

  1. Who could join your fundraising team to provide prayer, communication, storytelling, connections, or encouragement? What step will you take to invite them?
  2. Using the “Donor Orbit,” identify the core supporters, advisors, advocates, friends, and acquaintances connected to your ministry. Which relationship will you intentionally strengthen first?
